Cruise book of USS Olympia (C-6), 1895-1899, from San Francisco, CA to Manila, PI, by L.S. Young. The book contains a narrative of the cruise and a reissue of seven issues of the ship's newspaper, "The Bounding Billow." The newspapers memorialize the sinking of the USS Maine, the Battle of Manila Bay and the fall of Manila, PI. The cruise book contains photographs, textual illustrations and poetry by L.S. Young.

USS Maine (BB/2C), an armored battle ship, was blown up in Havana Harbor on February 15, 1898. A court of inquiry was unable to obtain evidence regarding the cause of the ship's destruction. In August 1910, Congress authorized the raising of the ship. The hull was refloated and towed into the Gulf of Mexico where it was sunk with honors on March 16, 1912.
